Challenge

To conduct its business in a sustainable way, the company must find innovative solutions that allow it to understand and respond to the complexity of the context in which it operates. Furthermore, it must establish a structured and constant relationship with its stakeholders. Only in this way will it be able to move along a route that combines economic growth, social development and protection of the natural heritage. To succeed, however, it is essential that you adopt a systemic, inclusive and transparent approach, which develops a strong orientation towards innovation and improves its ability to measure business decisions by analyzing all the impacts (economic and otherwise) that they determine, in the short, medium and long term.

Value

The first element to take into consideration concerns the values and the governance model of the company. In fact, both must integrate the principles of sustainability.

A second element, instead, regards the sustainability of the product (or service) during the life cycle, in line with the principles of the circular economy.

The third element can be identified in the operational dimension, ie the integration of the sustainability principles within the business processes. Sustainability is transversal to all the functions and all the business processes since it concerns not only "what the company does" but also the "way in which it does it".

A further element is connected to the company's ability to play the role of "development actor". In fact, companies are responsible for their impact on society and, at the same time, have the opportunity to contribute to the creation of a sustainable development model. In this sense, operating in a sustainable way does not only mean "doing less than something negative" (eg polluting less, producing less waste, etc.) but promoting the development of the context in which we operate.

The last two basic elements of corporate sustainability are undoubtedly linked to the management of the relationship with stakeholders and to the capacity to measure and report on performance and the impacts generated.

To be really practiced, corporate sustainability must become part of the corporate culture. Very often, however, the creation of a corporate culture oriented towards corporate sustainability passes through the consolidation of sustainable practices within the company. For this reason it is important that, even in the absence of a corporate culture specifically geared towards sustainability, companies undertake a path, often made up of small steps, which leads to integrating sustainability in its own way of operating, thus laying the foundations for a real transformation of the company's culture from a sustainability perspective. However, it is undeniable that the commitment of the company's top management is of great importance to activate the transformation necessary to make a company truly sustainable.
